Meet the team: an interview with Khotso Micha
By Felicity Brown
The driving force of Southern Xplorer is embodied in ‘The Boss’ Khotso Micha. With 13 years’ of travel industry experience, a motivational attitude, and cheeky personality, it is no wonder why Khotso has been the managing director at Southern Xplorer for over six years. Read about ‘The Boss’ and his good, bad, and downright ugly perceptions of the travel industry!
1. What do you do in SX?
Khotso: As the co-founder, my main focus is growing the business and forming partnerships in new destinations, but I also love supporting the team and helping everyone out
2. Favourite part of your job?
Khotso: Discovering new routes and then introducing these routes to travellers! Seeing their reactions and amazement is so rewarding and makes me proud of what we’ve achieved
3. What drew you in to the world of tourism?
Khotso: Through my own travels and exploring our region I realised how much Southern Africa has to offer… I realised then that I wanted to tailor make experiences that enhance ways to travel uniquely and responsibly
4. Favourite SX tour and why?
Khotso: Ooof! That’s tough man! Can I not choose two?! Okay, okay, I’d say the 21 day tour. It covers most of South Africa and brings such diversity to your experience because you can go into regions deeply, then falling in love with their cultures and landscapes
5. If you could visit one place in the Southern African region where would you go, and why?
Khotso: Lesotho! It’s relatively uncharted and the rawness of life there… just wow… it’s like going back into time and seeing people live untouched of western civilisation. That’s the dream for anyone, right? – to visit a spot unknown

6. What was your best travel experience?
Khotso: Hiking the wild coast completely unassisted, just following a map and sleeping on the beach – it was insane! It was my first raw experience in South Africa and was one of the first experiences that made me want to get into travel
7. Worst travel experience?
Khotso: Going on a cruise showed the bad side of tourism. These large scale tourism operations just create plastic experiences, when they have an opportunity to make positive changes instead. It was ugly!
